Location
New Caledonia is a French enclave located about 15° west of the International Date Line, idyllically situated in the heart of the southern Pacific Ocean. The largest island of the archipelago is Grande Terre with Mont Panié (1628 m), surrounded by many smaller islands and atolls. A coral reef of about 1600 km lines Grande Terre at intervals of 10 to 50 km, the water depth is usually not more than 40 m. It forms the second largest lagoon in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
History
New Caledonia was probably settled by the Kanaks around 1500 BC. However, Europeans discovered the islands with James Cook only in the eighteenth century. In 1853 it was taken into French possession. Today, 250,000 inhabitants of Melanesian, European, Polynesian and Asian origin live in the territory.
Economy
The economy consists mainly of crafts, mining (nickel), industry and tourism, and some agriculture. The official language is French; English is also commonly used. The official currency is the Franc Pacifique, which is pegged to the Euro.
Travel Information
A valid passport is required for entry, no special vaccinations are required. The time difference to Europe is +10 h in winter and +9 h in summer.
The capital Nouméa is served by several airlines, the best connection is offered by AIR FRANCE.
Interesting facts and sights
New Caledonia impresses with its unmistakable natural beauty as well as its exceptionally rich biodiversity of fauna and flora, of which many species - such as the hardly flying Kagu - are endemic.
The landscape is also very diverse, with tropical forests, fertile plains, savannah and mangroves on the coast. White sandy beaches and turquoise waters give New Caledonia a reputation as an Eden in the ocean.
Nouméa has several attractions to offer: Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie, Centre culturel Tjibaou in styled Kanak architecture, Musée d'histoire maritime, Musée du Bagne with guided tour of the buildings of the former penal camp on the Nouville Peninsula, Acquarium des Lagons, Place des Cocotiers with its colonial-style music kiosk and the city museum.
With its blend of ancient oceanic traditions and French culture, New Caledonia is a unique vacation destination by sea or land.
The archipelago can be explored in many ways: Sailing, hiking, diving or snorkeling - there are no limits to your adventurous spirit!
Weather
Sailing area is the natural coast of Grande Terre in the south and east from Nouméa, the absolutely worth seeing Ile des Pins (Kunie) in the southeast as well as the Iles Loyauté with Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa and Tiga, which are located about 50 nautical miles further east. The area is safe to sail and well protected by the coral reefs. There is hardly any current except in the passages, the tidal range is 1 m maximum. The trade winds blow from the southeast with 10 to 15 knots in the cool season, with 15 to 25 knots in the rainy season and lead straight to the small bays of Grande Terre or the archipelago Iles Loyauté.
The best sailing season is in May and June and from September to November.
